Government reveals owner of otedola bridge tanker that caused explosion.

The government has revealed that the explosion was due to vehicle defect and human errors and has vowed to prosecute both driver and owner.

Lagos state government has announced that it has discovered the owner of the fuel tanker that exploded and claimed at least 12 lives in the state last month

The Mack tanker loaded with 33,000 litres of premium motor spirit (PMS), lost control of its brake and exploded on Otedola bridge along Lagos Ibadan expressway on the 28 of June this year where at least 12 persons were reported dead.

Investigation by the government revealed that the truck was registered in Kano and had changed ownership 13 times since purchase.

Speaking in a meeting about the accident at the Bagauda Kaltho press centre in Alausa on Tuesday 24th July, the state commissioner for transportation Mr Ladi Lawanson disclosed the current owner of the tanker to be a certain Mr Hassan Yusuf Maiwaka.

Lawanson disclosed to The Nation that Maiwaka will be brought to the state to face prosecution as the government had earlier ruled that the accident occurs due to vehicular defect and human errors.

He also disclosed that the government has written to the commissioner of police in Lagos to ensure that the owner of the truck is brought from Kano to Lagos for prosecution.

The state commissioner of police earlier disclosed that plans are ongoing to prosecute the driver as well as the owner of the tanker.

It was also disclosed that the tanker was originally designed as a 14,959kg (15 tons) drilling rig with low bed in 1999 before it was converted in Nigeria to fuel tank carrier of 30 tons. From this investigation, the truck should not have been loaded to the weight of 30tons which is twice its pulling capacity.
